What is Clinical Neuroscience ?

Dr. Guillemette is one of only two healthcare providers in the Ottawa area with the specialized accreditation of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board. The practice of clinical neuroscience is typically done by a healthcare provider with an expertise in neurology. Clinical neuroscience depends on a clinicians ability to perform a comprehensive neurological exam with their patients. Once the diagnosis is determined, specific treatments are performed on the patient to rehabilitate the patient from their condition. Therapeutic activities change significantly between the patients as they are intended to meet the patients specific needs. Although the therapeutic activities may look unique in their application they are all based on scientific studies. Clinical Neuroscience practitioners typically combine different types of therapies in unique ways to improve the chance of making neuroplastic changes.

Types of Therapies

Vision Therapy

Vision therapy is the use of eye movements to create neuroplastic changes in brain function. We have several different kinds of eye movements which each require specific brain centres to function in order to perform the eye movements. Therefore by exercising the visual deficiencies we can create plastic change in the way the brain is functioning.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular rehabilitation can be performed in many different was. Typically it involves some kind of head movement directed at stimulating one of the inner ear canals. However, vestibular therapy can also be done with electrical stimulation, vision therapy, balance training, vibration and auditory stimulations.

Electrical Stimulation

There are many different kinds of electrical stimulation therapies. Electric stimulation can be used as a pain inhibitor, it can be used to stimulate and contract muscles groups for retraining, it can be used as a PONS stimulator, and it can also be used to stimulate your Vagus nerve.

Cognitive Tasks

While dealing with neurological disorders it's important to understand that some therapies focus more on the mental and less on the physical side of rehabilitation. Patients often require helped with their memory, concentration, and emotional regulations.

Motor Skills Training

Our brains control every muscles in our bodies which can result in significant impairments when you're suffering from neurological difficulties. For that reason patients often performed fine and gross motor skills exercise during their rehabilitation.

Other Therapies

Considering clinical neuroscience is dealing with neurological disorders the list of the therapies are quite extensive. Practitioners need to be flexible in order to meet the needs of the patient.  Other notable therapies may include: nutritional supplementation, mirror therapy, soft tissue therapies, adjustments, biofeedback, and photobiomodulation.
